How it works

  1. Choose goods or PSV and the licence. Goods and PSV licences have different fee scales; special restricted applies to PSV only.
  2. Choose what you are paying for. A new licence, a major change or the 5-yearly continuation.
  3. Read the fees and deadlines. Each line shows when the fee must be paid. You pay online in the Vehicle Operator Licensing service, by phone or by post.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a goods vehicle operator licence cost?

£257 to apply and £401 when the licence is issued: £658 in all, plus £68 if you take an interim licence. Then £401 every 5 years to continue it.

How much does a PSV operator licence cost?

£209 to apply for a standard or restricted PSV licence, with no issue fee and no continuation fee. A special restricted (taxi) licence costs £61 to apply and £61 every 5 years.

When is the goods continuation fee due?

The £401 continuation fee is due before the end of the month before your continuation date. If the date is 31 July, pay by 30 June. A licence whose fee is not paid in time ends automatically.

Which changes to a goods licence cost money?

A major change costs £257: more vehicles or trailers overall, more at an operating centre, a new operating centre, or new conditions at a centre. Upgrading restricted to standard, or national to international, has no application fee, and adding or removing vehicles within your margin is free.

Have operator licence fees gone up in 2026?

No. Goods fees have been the same since 1 October 2014 (the interim fee since 1 April 2012) and PSV fees since 1 October 2014.
